Deep Dish Pizza Dough Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons instant yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 1/4 cups water, room temperature
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon + 4 tablespoons olive oil, divided

Instructions:

  1. Combine flour, cornmeal, salt, sugar, and yeast in a large bowl (or the bowl of a stand mixer). Add the water and melted butter, and mix until a dough forms.
  2. If using a stand mixer, switch to the dough hook and knead on low speed for about 4 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic. If kneading by hand, this should take about 7-8 minutes.
  3. Roll the dough into a tight ball and place in a large bowl greased with 1 teaspoon of olive oil. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let the dough rise at room temperature for about 2 hours, or until doubled in size.
  4. Once the dough has risen, turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Roll it out to fit your cast iron skillet or deep dish pizza pan. You'll want the dough to be thick enough to hold the toppings but thin enough to cook thoroughly.
  5. Add your toppings and bake the pizza in your preheated oven.
